Getting to the isles from mersing can be a bit messay. First of all, there are three type of boats - the speedboat is twice as fast as the slow boat, while the fast boats refer to the ferries. Secondly there are no schedules, except for Tioman and Rawa. Generally, what boat you take and when you leave depends on the size of the group, and your choice of resort and island.

TIps of Travel ...

The best diving season along the east coast is from March to May when visibility is at its best. It is possible to dive right until October to February all diving stops because of the monsoon. In fact many resorts close during this period.

Be careful of sandflies on Pulau Besar's beaches; the bugs are particularly nasty in the cool evenings.

Telek beach is lined with small virtually indistingushable resorts you can check out each one until you find something you like. Rate : RM200-RM400

Peladang
is well-kept, kampung style accommodation with roomy chalets in pretty gardens, but sits across the road near the mini market and has no beach. Rate : less than RM100

Air Batang (ABC) and Juara are backpacker and A-frame beaches, Salang also has budget accommodation as does Mukut, while Paya and Genting cater to locals and Singaporeans and have more up-market accommodation.

There are dive shops at Telek (Tioman Reef Divers and Scuba Point), ABC (B&J dive centre), salang (Dive Asia and Fishermen Dive Centre), Penuba (Bali Hai Divers).
